With Crossfire and Hardball as titles, viewers know what they are getting into when then put together the channel over to the news networks that air these broadcasts. In Deborah Tannen’s “TV’s War of Words” she exemplifies the nature of the “ struggle” shows saying “by turning everything into a left field hand-right fight, the argument purification gives us trumped-up, showcase debates between two oversimplified sides, leaving no room for the real arguments. With everything being black and white it gives no room for the grey area. It stereotypes everyone as either being left or right, correct or incorrect, it leaves us without compromise. The media’s liveliness is with keeping people divided. Tannen states that “Ann Coutler a commentator for the right finds that when she takes a position that doesn’t fit the producers idea of conservatism, they don’t want her.” But why is it television does this? Simply because of yield and demand. Its what people want to see. These networks just satisfy the publics argumentative mien of life. This thought process “rest on the assumption that opponent is the crush way to get anything done.” When two sides just difference of opinion it out this is not the case. Nothing is accomplished, people are left without resolution.
