Curanderismo

It is used by many Mexican-Americans to supplement conventional c ar for; it is a mind, body and spiritual healing approach that are immersed in tradition. It is curanderismo. “Curanderismo consists of a set of folk medical beliefs, rituals, and practices that appear to address the psychological, spiritual, and social needs of traditional…people. It is a confused system of folk medication with its own theoretical, diagnostic, and therapeutic aspects. Curanderismo is conceptually holistic in nature; no separation is do between the mind and the body, as in western medicine and psychology.”[1] Within curanderismo there is a whole new creation that I would like to explore, from the different types of specialties within curanderismo and how they intertwine with separately other. I would also like to touch base on the account statement of curanderismo, some famous curandros and present some in-person experiences from myself and a family member.
Let me begin with a brief history of curanderismo, it can be traced back as far as when our first ancestors came to America from Spain. Curanderismo is a mixture of Spanish apparitional beliefs and herbal remedies influenced by the Indians, the Aztecs particularly.



[2] The Spanish were said to have been influenced by Arabic with their medicine and health practices and by Greek humoral medicine. The Greeks introduced the emphasis on balance between light and darkness, passion and cold. [3] It is believed that the Aztec leader Montezuma I created the Huaxtepec garden, in this garden thousands of medicinal plants were questioned on by Aztec priests. In the sixteenth century, when the Spanish conquered Mexico the garden and the research was destroyed because the Catholics believed that herbal healing was blasphemous. Although everything was destroyed, the wisdom has been passed down by the native people and has become an important key in curanderismo.
