This mosque is the national mosque of Pakistan, and it has been the largest mosque in the world between 1986-1993. It has been named after the king of Saudi Arabia, Faisal bin Abdul Aziz. The Faisal mosque is located in Islamabad which is the capital of Pakistan.
In 1966 the king of Saudi Arabia came to hollo Pakistan, and he gave the government the idea and supported them to build a large national mosque. Later on in 1969 a big international competition was held for the best architect. in that respect were 43 proposals from 17 countries. The Turkish architect, Vedat Dalokays project was elected, after iv days of deliberation. The construction of the Faisal mosque began in 1976. The government of Saudi Arabia spends great hundred million dollars on the mosque, because the project was funded by them.



The mosque was named after ability Faisal after his assassination in 1975. In 1986 the mosque was completed and it was a role model for many people and mosques around the world. There were some Muslims who criticized the design of the mosque because it dont consistent with the traditions and because of not having a traditional dome. The Faisal mosque was used to house the international Muslim University.
