On the night of swear out 25, 1931, a deputy sheriff in Paint Creek Alabama stopped a consign manpowert train travelling from battle of Chattanooga, Tennessee. They arrested nine black men ranging in age from 12 to 20 on the train. They also demonstrate two young white women, Victoria Price and florid Bates, dressed in men’s’ overalls.
Price claimed she was ravaged by six of the young men, while Bates claimed she was raped by the other three.
All of the nine men were arrested and taken to the capital of Mississippi County jail in Scottsboro, Alabama. That night, a mob gathered alfresco the jail. But the Governor sent the National Guard in to protect the young men, who would become known as the Scottsboro Boys.
A crowd of ten thousand men came to town for the trials of the men. Chattanooga attorney, Stephen Roddy, who was unfamiliar with the law and also a drunk, was to represent the men. topical anaesthetic attorney Milo Moody, who would assist Roddy, only had 25 proceedings to meet with the clients before the trial began.
The jury, an all-white all-male group of men, were shocked by the stories Price and Bates told, but they were not impressed by the defendants when they started to felon on each other and accuse the other men. later just a two hour deliberation, all men were found guilty.
With only 72 hours left until the boys were scheduled for the electric car chair, the ILD argued to the Alabama haughty Court that the boys were denied a fair trial, no proper representation and that the comments of the public influenced the jury. When the Alabama Court disagreed, they took it to the Supreme Court who took sides with the ILD. The boys were given a New York Attorney, Samuel Leibowitz.
In March 1933, the Scottsboro boys began their second trial. Leibowitz began his trial by pointing out that the jury was racist because black people didn’t serve on the jury. The try denied the request for a mistrial.
