The season following existence War II has sometimes been characterized as the Postmodern Period (1945-Present). As time wore on, authors (as closely as musicians and artists) began to realize that those who had thrown off convention in the Modern Period had done so only to manufacture a new set of conventions, most of them even more restrictive than the shackles they had discarded. Postmodern authors sought to escape from the new content that modern authors had created by claiming that meaning itself was defunct. Like the Lady of the spurt Kirtle, the witch of postmodernism has tried to convince us that there is no light, no truth, no meaning, and no reason to search for it. scarcely C. S. Lewis gives us the correct response in the mouth of a morose marshwiggle:

Suppose we have. thus all I can say is that, in that case, the comprise things seem a good deal more consequential than the real ones.
