The world is a place filled with illusions, where nothing is invariably as it seems. Evil plows behind a veil of goodness, and deceptions hide the cruel truth about the world. The Tempest written by William Shakespeare is a play in which Prospero, the protagonist, reflects negative character traits, as he gains power and summons evil upon the island. Prospero is presented as a negative character in the play beca usage he uses his wizardly power to take surmount over the island, and the people on it, for his benefit. He manipulates his daughter Miranda, along with the rest of the men on the island, tricking them into qualification his own plans come true. Furthermore, Prospero tortures the men living on the island in various ways, in order to achieve his desires. Prospero shows that he is a cruel and manipulative leader with his desire for control, use of manipulation, and torturous methods. Therefore, Prospero is not a positive character but a bitter tyrant.

At first Prospero appears to be a benevolent leader, doing his best to protect and take care for the inhabitants of the island, specially Miranda. On a closer look however, Prospero controls each individualistic to fulfill his own wishes.



He controls Caliban; first by winning over his ownership of the island, and then by making Caliban his hard worker and forcing him into doing labor. Prospero also controls the audiences impression of Caliban by making it seem as if Caliban is a monster. When Prospero first comes to the island, he treats Caliban well, severe to gain Calibans loyalty.
