The Freudian view is deterministic. According to freud our behaviour is determined by ill-considered forces, unconscious motivators and biological and intellectual drives as these evolve during the first 6 years of life. Instincts are central to the Freudian approach. Freud identifies life instincts by the name Libido. Our libido is said to be a source of motive that encompasses sexual energy. Freud sees that the goal of human life is to use this instinct to gain pleasure and avoid pain. He also identifies a death instinct, which accounts for the aggressive drive. Managing this aggressive drive is said to be difficult and freud believed that both drives are powerful determinants of why masses act the way they do.
Structure the psychoanalytic view states that the personality is made up of 3 systems the id, the ego and the superego.
From an orthodox Freudian perspective humans are viewed as energy systems. The kinetics of the personality consists in ways which the psychic energy is distributed to the id, ego and superego. Because the amount of energy is limited, one system gains control over the available energy at the expense of the others 2. Behaviour is thus determined by this psychic energy.
The ID this is present from birth and is the firsthand source of psychic energy. It lacks organisation and is blind, demanding and insistent. The ID is a cauldron of transport and cannot tolerate tension. It is ruled by the pleasure principle and is illogical, amoral and compulsive to satisfy instinctual needs.
