As time goes on, with every psychological science class I have taken, I find that needs we come back to one specific challenge; be it through discussion of experimental theory, evolution, statistics, or even fabrication (thank you Grobstein). When we study the sciences, we must always ask, what do we have or do that other organisms do not? And only in my studies of behavior, have I been able to logically answer that question with any satisfaction. The answer is more words: language. Humans ar the only organisms who engage in discussion with themselves, with others, immediately, and over time, intimately things present and closely things which may never exist. Human ar defined by verbal behaviors.
But first, what is language? kindred many other characteristics thought to distinguish one assort of complex organisms from another, there is a great deal of contest concerning what it is exactly, that separates us from lower animals and then how do we go about discussing it. A general consensus awaits to be that language is the ability to typify objects or events (internal and external), real or abstract. (Aboitz, 1997) It is a voluntary, as unlike to elicited, action and a speaker can combine pieces of it to establish new concepts.
Language is intimately bound into society and culture, besides unlike other social behaviors it is not taught.(Catania, 1994) It doesnt seem as sensitive to items we normally construe as honour (Skinner, 1981) and although it follows some predictable rules, we have yet to come up with a theory that covers all the bases. Although this definition seems to be a mix of both cognitive and behavioral psych definitions, for this paper, language, speech and its ethnical and social implications will all go under the comprehensive of verbal behavior.
